It’s summer (at last!) and the shops are full of brightly coloured clothes and accessories. From bright neons to crayon-box colours and pretty pastels, colour is most definitely where it’s at this season, as this selection from New Look proves.

The question is, would you take these colours as far as your beauty regime, and in particular your nails? (more…)

It seems as though the world of fashion has a direct tap into my brain right now, and is pulling out all my childhood fashion nightmares for recycling.
Last week I was talking about nauticals, now it seems that checks and tartans are making a comeback. Er… why??

As the child of a Scottish father (albeit without an accent or any particular passion for the place), in the 80s, the tartan kilt-skirt came second only to the sailor suit when it came to ‘smart wear’. In fact, it may even have usurped the sailor suit on several occasions, especially when visiting family above the border. I remember many instances where the hideous outfit – kilt, complete with ridiculous oversized decorative pin, teamed with white polo neck or (arg!) itchy arran jumper – was trotted out over the years. I believe there was even a trip to a kilt shop once, possibly the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, where we were supposed to ooh and aah over the different tartans on offer (for the record, my father’s family falls into the ‘Hunting Stuart’ bracket). And the least said about the evening of Scottish Country Dancing the better…. (more…)

Top Five Trade Tips Monday, June 2, 2008

I thought I’d share my top five secret tricks of the trade and personal favourite tips.

1. Lipcote is a girls best friend.. just not for lips!

If you’ve ever tried Lipcote, that clear sealant that’s supposed to keep your lipstick in place, you’ll probably not have been very impressed with it. I know I wasn’t. But I bet you didn’t know that it actually has some rather fab other uses instead! If you mix a drop or two with some loose eyeshadow or eye pigments, it turns into a fantastic liquid eyeliner that stays put all day. Sound familiar? Yep, it’s one of the selling points of Benefit’s She-Laq. And a fifth of the price! What’s more they now do a glitter version (called Glitzy) in six different colours to really make your colours sparkle!

  2. Line before you colour
If you don’t like an obvious liner but want eye definition, or aren’t very good at doing straight lines, then apply your black liner before the rest of your eye look. You can work the colour right down into the roots of your lashes without worrying if you’re going a bit wonky, because when you put your eyeshadow on top it will cover any mistakes whilst leaving the eyes well defined.

Every spring it seems to happen. You walk into the shops awaiting the arrival of some lovely summery styles to wipe away the winter blues, and what do you get hit by? Stripes. Red and white stripes. Navy and white stripes. Sailor suits. Big brass buttons with anchors on them. Blazers. Yes, once again the nautical trend is back, and I for one really wish it wasn’t.

I think my repulsion for all things sailor-style may stem from the fact that I am a child from the 80s, the decade of ra-ra skirts, tube socks, matching leggings-and-t-shirt-sets, and Global Hypercolor tshirts. None of which you’d think would have anything to do with nauticals, (and you’re right, they don’t), but there was one other 80s trend, one of which I (nearly) Dare Not Speak. The one which sowed the seed of hatred for all things sailor-y in my mind.

Sailor Dresses.

High End or High Street? Does the price of your make-up really matter? Saturday, May 10, 2008

I have been a cosmetics junkie and a shopaholic for many, many years. At the same time, I have also been relatively scathing of spending a lot of money on one product. I prefer quantity when I go shopping, so if I can get three high street lipglosses for the price of one from a beauty counter then that’s the way I’m going to go.

The only reason I really wondered if I ought to re-evaluate my opinion was when I became a make-up artist 4 years ago. When you’re doing a girl’s makeup for her prom you don’t want to be wondering if it’s going to stay in place all night or if her foundation will be patchy by the time the awards are read out. Likewise, I know I don’t mind if my makeup kit comes mainly from Superdrug, but is that necessarily what a client will think when I open up my bag? The same is true, and even more so, when you’re actually working on a set or shoot with celebrities, major or minor. My mentor, a fantastic lady called Sue (or SueSue as I like to call her) has been working in the business for over 30 years and although she has worked with some celebrities I know she loves dearly, she also has tales of people who will only touch certain brands or products, to the point where if she knew she was going to be working with a certain person she would have to ring up the brand and say, look, I’m working with so-and-so and they really love your products, and try to get sent some (yes, celebs may have the money to buy Creme De La Mer – or not as most of the time they may well get it free – but us humble artists don’t!). Bottom line is that product snobbery is rife in the industry – but is it really justified?? (more…)
