Summer Days Are Coming Friday, March 20, 2009

Just a quick post to share three of the polishes I’ve pawed from the latest collection by China Glaze, entitled Summer Days.

The collection contains 6 of their famous ‘glass flecked’ polishes, which give a beautiful glittering effect especially in sunlight. Somewhat like the effect of sunshine on the water. These three were the ones that caught my eye, but they also have an orange, a red, and another deep pink/red.

I will be swatching these soon, but in the meantime swatches of the whole collection can be seen here:

They’re available to buy from my favourite etailers – Head2Toe Beauty, 8ty8 Beauty, and Transdesign.

Quick Archetype Cosmetics Update Friday, March 6, 2009

I’ve had a few messages from people asking me how I’ve gotten on with Archetype cosmetics. Some time back there was a big blow up about how it was taking months to ship orders, orders didn’t arrive etc etc.
After this, Holly took on a lady named Kelli to help fill orders and keep up with emails and things got better – on 1st January they were supposedly down to a two and a half week backlog, and turnaround time was due to be down to 1 week.
However – there have been no more updates since then.

My advice? Trust your own instinct. If you want to place an order, email them first to ask about turnaround time so you have a definite answer from them, and be prepared to keep in contact if need be.

Personally, I love the colours I have from them – the texture is nice, they are well pigmented and the sparklies are dense and vibrant (nothing worse than getting a sparkly colour that doesn’t sparkle!). The price is also so low that I am willing to wait for them to turn up. However, that’s my personal opinion – it you don’t want to wait, you may be better off not ordering.

Ciao for now kitty-cats x

Foundation Masterclass Part 3 – Your Tools Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Now you’ve picked your foundation – how best to apply it? Gone are the days when your fingers would do, and even sponges seem to be hard done by, with everyone telling us we should be using a foundation brush, but which is best? This pic represents my selection of ‘base’ tools (click to see full-sized).

Although I’ll mainly be talking about foundation, I thought I’d include my two main powder brushes for those of you who use powder foundation (MMU or otherwise). Personally I am not a fan of the ‘buffing’ technique that many of the MMU companies advocate, I prefer to brush mine on in a simlar motion to how I would apply liquid foundation, controlling it over the areas that need it in a stroking motion. But, onto the tools for liquid.. (more…)

Available from: Cherryculture.com, Ebay, various drugstores in US and Canada

I first saw these palettes on Nessasary Makeup when the lovely Vanessa did a look using the ‘Tease’ set (which was also called Pixie at some point). Inspired by the colours, the price, and Vanessa’s reviews, I ordered 6 sets – Tease, Enchanted, Wildflower, Fabulous, Unforgettable, and Tea Time.

I lurve lurve lurve my eyeshadow pencils, and NYX Jumbos are some of the best.

Creamy, pigmented and overall fab, they are great for both lining and colouring the whole lid. Lemon, a fizzy green with golden sparkles, is one of my favourites at the moment, whilst Oyster and Purple are also both iridecent (Oyster is cool pinky lilac with blue iridescence, and Purple is a cool two-tone blue-purple). Because they are quite waxy my tip for getting these babies to last and last is to apply a good base first, such as Benefit Lemonaid, or MAD Minerals Eyeshadow Primer Base. With both products I apply two thin layers, blotting it well into my skin, then allow to set for a few minutes before continuing with colour. Afterwards, set the Jumbo Pencil with a light dusting of transluscent powder or a mineral finishing or setting powder.

It’s summer (at last!) and the shops are full of brightly coloured clothes and accessories. From bright neons to crayon-box colours and pretty pastels, colour is most definitely where it’s at this season, as this selection from New Look proves.

The question is, would you take these colours as far as your beauty regime, and in particular your nails? (more…)

Foundation Masterclass Part 2 – choosing a type Wednesday, June 11, 2008

A little late, but better late than never.. Part 2 of the Foundation Masterclass is all about choosing your type of base.
There are a lot of ‘sub types’ to choose from, but I’m grouping them into the general categories of:
Liquid; Stick; Powder; Cream and Mousse.

Liquid Foundationis one of the most common, and also the most versatile. This is partly due to the fact that formulations have become a lot more advanced and so there are so many types on the market – for dry skin, oily skin, ageing skin, tired skin… You can get anti-ageing versions, ones with light reflecting pigments, those that promise to mattify oily skin, or moisturise dry. It is also relatively easy to apply and comes in many different coverage types. As such it’s probably the best bet for most people. (more…)

Top Five Trade Tips Monday, June 2, 2008

I thought I’d share my top five secret tricks of the trade and personal favourite tips.

1. Lipcote is a girls best friend.. just not for lips!

If you’ve ever tried Lipcote, that clear sealant that’s supposed to keep your lipstick in place, you’ll probably not have been very impressed with it. I know I wasn’t. But I bet you didn’t know that it actually has some rather fab other uses instead! If you mix a drop or two with some loose eyeshadow or eye pigments, it turns into a fantastic liquid eyeliner that stays put all day. Sound familiar? Yep, it’s one of the selling points of Benefit’s She-Laq. And a fifth of the price! What’s more they now do a glitter version (called Glitzy) in six different colours to really make your colours sparkle!

  2. Line before you colour
If you don’t like an obvious liner but want eye definition, or aren’t very good at doing straight lines, then apply your black liner before the rest of your eye look. You can work the colour right down into the roots of your lashes without worrying if you’re going a bit wonky, because when you put your eyeshadow on top it will cover any mistakes whilst leaving the eyes well defined.

Foundation Masterclass Part 1 – choosing your coverage Sunday, June 1, 2008

Foundation, base, whatever you want to call it, as the name suggests this is the building block upon which the rest of your makeup look relies. No matter how good your skin, if you want to create a really good look you should always use a building block of some kind to start on, but there are so many products around, where on earth do you start?

First things first – type of base. The key thing to decide first is the type of coverage you want. If you have good skin that just needs a bit of evening out in terms of tone, look for something with words such as ‘sheer’ or ‘light coverage’, or something like a tinted moisturiser. My personal favourite it Benefit Cosmetic’s Some Kind-A Gorgeous. It now comes in two shades – original and deep – and blends to match your skintone. Very fair skins or darker skins will probably find you may sit outside its colour boundaries (unfortunately Benefit has quite a limited range when it comes to darker skins in particular) but for most caucasian skin types and olive tones, this product is fab. It gives your skin a beautiful ‘finished’ look but is very lightweight and easy to use, and when finished with a bit of translucent powder it lasts well too. Other favoured high-street brands are Collection 2000 Sheer Coverage, Natural Collection Tinted Moisturiser.
If you want more coverage and something longer lasting, for example
