A little later than originally promised, and I apologise. I have no excuse, well, no good one, anyway. I don’t think the fact that I’ve been watching back-to-back episodes of NCIS counts…

Anyway, swiftly on to my review. If you haven’t read it yet, check out part one in which explained how I use mineral pigments, and reviews MAD Minerals, Fyrinnae, and Pure Luxe. In this review I’m looking at two companies – Taylor Made Minerals, and Archetype Cosmetics. (more…)

High End or High Street? Does the price of your make-up really matter? Saturday, May 10, 2008

I have been a cosmetics junkie and a shopaholic for many, many years. At the same time, I have also been relatively scathing of spending a lot of money on one product. I prefer quantity when I go shopping, so if I can get three high street lipglosses for the price of one from a beauty counter then that’s the way I’m going to go.

The only reason I really wondered if I ought to re-evaluate my opinion was when I became a make-up artist 4 years ago. When you’re doing a girl’s makeup for her prom you don’t want to be wondering if it’s going to stay in place all night or if her foundation will be patchy by the time the awards are read out. Likewise, I know I don’t mind if my makeup kit comes mainly from Superdrug, but is that necessarily what a client will think when I open up my bag? The same is true, and even more so, when you’re actually working on a set or shoot with celebrities, major or minor. My mentor, a fantastic lady called Sue (or SueSue as I like to call her) has been working in the business for over 30 years and although she has worked with some celebrities I know she loves dearly, she also has tales of people who will only touch certain brands or products, to the point where if she knew she was going to be working with a certain person she would have to ring up the brand and say, look, I’m working with so-and-so and they really love your products, and try to get sent some (yes, celebs may have the money to buy Creme De La Mer – or not as most of the time they may well get it free – but us humble artists don’t!). Bottom line is that product snobbery is rife in the industry – but is it really justified?? (more…)

First of all let me say that I am not a big user of mineral makeup as a whole. I have one foundation set that I use occasionally, but personally I prefer liquid or even greasepaint foundation, and I already have enough ‘normal’ blushers, lipsticks and glosses to sink several battleships. Nor am I particularly bothered (although maybe I should be) about the benefits of mineral makeup per se.

However, being a complete colour junkie I am a sucker for pigment eyeshadows, and any internet search will reveal a wealth of online companies selling mineral and pigment eyeshadows. So, where on earth to you start?? I don’t claim to be an authority on product, but as both a personal and professional user I do have a lot of experience to draw on. Do remember, though, that these are all my PERSONAL experiences and opinions, so don’t get mad if you don’t like them 😉

So far I have ordered colours from Pure Luxe Cosmetics, MAD Minerals, Fyrinnae, Taylor Made Minerals, and Archetype Cosmetics (links all available – look right!). As a rule I only order sample sizes as a) I always like to try before I commit to a whole jar and b) I have so many colours and work with such a huge variety of them that it’s rare I will need a whole jar unless the colour is particularly fabulous or turns into a complete staple. So, here goes my reviewing. Right now I’ll review 3 to save your eyes.. and my fingers! (more…)

Spring/summer catwalks were filled with brightly coloured make-up looks. My personal favourite collection was John Galliano’s, with a variety of looks I like to call ‘Marie Antoinette meets Miss Haversham’. (Check out the looks on Style.com – http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/S2008RTW/detail/thumb/JNGALLNO )

In honour of Galliano’s collection I have created the Cupcake Princess look.

Cupcake Princess

A bit theatrical for everyday wear perhaps 🙂 but it could be easily toned down for both daytime and a night out, especially with the wig out of the equation…! Here’s how to get the look:

*I try to mention a selection of products that are available in both the US and the UK so you can always find an alternative to use. Although a UK resident myself I do buy a lot of cosmetics from the US – check out my links to see where I shop*

The key to the look is a flawless, pale face. Skin was thoroughly cleansed and moisturised beforehand and the moisturiser allowed to sink in for 15 minutes before any more makeup was applied. I used MEMEME Perfecting Base Primer which has a slight iridescence to it, but there are loads on the market. Particularly oily
skin or skin with enlarged pores might want to try Benefit’s Dr Feelgood or Pure Luxe Cometics’ Eraser. If you already have great skin, a moisturiser with a slight shimmer like Superdrug’s Vitamin E Illuminating Moisture Cream or Oil Of Olay have several whose names don’t spring to mind right now!
